Zero Club celebrates the legacy of Chris Cornell with a Soundgarden Special

Zero Club Soundgarden Special Zombie Shack Red Cardinal Music Grunge

“No one sings like you anymore…”

On May 18th we lost one of the most talented musicians of this generation in Chris Cornell of Soundgarden / Audioslave. Arguably one of the best voices in the history of rock music, Cornell has a legacy of music most can only dream of. On July 28th Zero Club will be honouring his memory and the music of Soundgarden / Temple Of The Dog and even though it’s not 90s…. Audioslave amongst their usual tracks at our Soundgarden Special.

For many, the first time Soundgarden caught their attention was the eye-opening and dark video for the 1994 track “Black Hole Sun” from the album, Superunknown. The dystopian yet hallucinogenic video found itself etched into the memory of everyone who saw it and still stands up to this day. But before this release, the band had made their name in the booming Seattle Grunge scene, being one of the forefathers of 90’s Alternative music as we know it.

Soundgarden was one of the seminal bands in the creation of grunge, a style of alternative rock that developed in Seattle, and was one of a number of grunge bands signed to the record label Sub Pop. Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign to a major label (A&M Records in 1988), though the band did not achieve commercial success until they popularized the genre in the early 1990s with Seattle contemporaries Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains.

Soundgarden achieved its biggest success with the 1994 album Superunknown, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and yielded the Grammy Award-winning singles “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman”. In 1997, the band broke up due to internal strife over its creative direction. After more than a decade of working on projects and other bands, Soundgarden reunited in 2010 and their sixth studio album, King Animal, was released two years later.

As of 2012, Soundgarden sold more than 10.5 million records in the United States, and an estimated 22.5 million worldwide.  VH1 ranked Soundgarden at number 14 in their special 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.

Each single, classic and hidden gem from the extensive Soundgarden back catalogue will be played during the night, as well as tracks from his other projects. Besides that, you can expect to hear the following :

GRUNGE // GEEK ROCK // RIOT GIRL // 90’S GENERATION X ANTHEMS
Nirvana // The Pixies // Pearl Jam // Weezer // Nada Surf // The Melvins // Smashing Pumpkins // Hole // Presidents Of The USA // Stone Temple Pilots // No Doubt // Beck // Soundgarden // Quicksand // Red Hot Chili Peppers // Jane’s Addiction // Eels // Foo Fighters // Faith No More // L7 // Garbage // Alice In Chains // Alanis Morissette // Bush // Mudhoney // The Offspring // Pavement // Butthole Surfers // Sonic Youth // The Breeders // Sublime // Temple Of The Dog // Everclear // Counting Crows // Silverchair // Dinosaur Jr // Radiohead // REM // Tad // Rage Against The Machine + much, much more.

Deadbolt DJ What’s My Age Again? – a Pop Punk special at Jimmy’s

What's My Age Again Jimmy's Manchester Pop Punk Emo Deadbolt

This weekend sees the popular new Manchester venue, Jimmy’s throw a party dedicated to old school Pop Punk and guilty pleasures of the early 2000’s, as they host What’s My Age Again? – a special night featuring Deadbolt and Fireball.  The first 50 people through the door will get a free Fireball shot, with free shots and other giveaways taking place all night to signal the first time the brand has been available in the bar.

Since opening in the cool “Northern Quarter” part of Manchester a mere four months ago, Jimmy’s has already established itself as the place for great live music, rock and roll vibes and craft beer on tap on both floors. When they wanted to throw a Pop Punk party, they didn’t hesitate to get in touch with the number one alternative party in the city – Deadbolt to ensure the music was just right.

“It’s always a big compliment when new venues and promoters get in touch and want to work with Deadbolt, especially if it’s a suitable brand with really cool people at the helm, so this event was a no-brainer. We have other events taking place here later in the year, so hopefully it’s the start of a beautiful relationship!” said Liam Connolly, founder and DJ of Deadbolt when asked about the first WMAA special.

So if you’re at a loose end this weekend, and really crave some Blink 182, Good Charlotte or maybe some Simple Plan, make sure you head to Jimmy’s on April 28th for What’s My Age Again – and enjoy the Fireball!

Deadbolt join DJ Lethal at Factory

Deadbolt Support DJ Lethal - Red Cardinal Music

On May 3rd, Deadbolt DJs will party alongside the one and only DJ Lethal, known for his stints in House Of Pain and Limp Bizkit as he takes to the stage at Factory for his Manchester date.

DJ Lethal as he’s known in the industry has backed such phenomenons as Limp Bizkit and House of Pain. Like so many music men, his first influences in sound came from his guitar-playing father, Grisha Dimant.  Upon his family’s arrival to America, Leor was heavily influenced by the new, gritty hip-hop genre that was transcending the urban community and reaching suburban youth across America. Watching closely, he decided very early that he would not only be a part of the great bands he encountered as the DJ, he would be an integral piece to the puzzle as a key instrument himself.  It was then when he joined House Of Pain, mostly known for their huge worldwide hit, Jump Around – which is still played in clubs every week of the year.

On House of Pain’s final tour, Limp Bizkit, an up-and-coming band from Jacksonville, Florida was hired as a supporting act. DJ Lethal and the band became friends, and later, Limp Bizkit hired him to do some work on their recordings, eventually asking him if he wanted to join them. DJ Lethal accepted the offer, and the band became one of the most popular nu metal groups during the late 90s and early 2000s, selling over 40 million records worldwide.

DJ Lethal wanted his contributions to the band recordings to be more original than typical DJs in bands at the time. “There are a couple of other rock bands that have DJs and they’re just like, [mimics a chirp scratch] ‘Hey, what’s going on? Let me spin around a couple of times and show off that I can spin two records.’ So I definitely knew I didn’t want to be just another DJ in a rock band. I wanted to be another instrument—a part of the band, like another guitar player.”

The event will be hosted by Glasswerk, a promotion company bringing the very best upcoming and established acts to venues allover the UK for over a decade.

Zero Club celebrates Kurt Cobain with a Nirvana Special – Red Cardinal Music

Zero Club Nirvana Special Jimmys Manchester - Kurt Cobain - Red Cardinal Music

23 years ago on April 8th, we lost the hero and spokesperson of a generation. The one and only Kurt Cobain. So to celebrate his life and achievements, we are throwing a party in his honour at the coolest new venue in Manchester – Jimmy’s. Come as you are.

Kurt Cobain challenged the status quo of the music world, showed kids everywhere that rock musicians shouldn’t be judged by their lycra trousers and how neat their hair was as well as played from the heart with every track. This is why he is an icon, not only of the 90’s but one to be revered in any decade.

Zero Club is more a labour of love and passion project than another club night to us at Red Cardinal Music, as it gives us all a chance to relive what was a very important era of music and pop culture all over again at our events, and we wouldn’t have all of this without Nirvana. They weren’t the first Grunge band, nor were they the most original – but the honesty and visceral melodies from Bleach all the way to In Utero still stand the test of time and have found their rightful place in the upper echelons of music history.

Between 12-1 we will play nothing but Nirvana for the big fans and obsessives, with other tracks and connected artists sprinkled throughout the night.

You will also hear the usual ZC anthems, so expect the following :

GRUNGE // GEEK ROCK // 90’S GENERATION X ANTHEMS

See you at Jimmy’s.
